Earlier this year at RDC 2024, Roblox revealed that Groups would be rebranded as Communities by the end of the year. On Thursday, Roblox officially rolled out Communities, along with additional new features, and a preview of Forums, also revealed at RDC 2024.

All instances of “Groups” have been replaced by “Communities”

Ban Community Members

Community owners on Roblox can now ban members, preventing them from being able to joining back.

  • Banned users are immediately removed from the community.
  • Banned users will be unable to rejoin the community unless their ban status is reversed by a community admin or moderator.
  • Community admins and moderators can be given permission to ban lower ranked users.
  • Banning a user is at the community admin or moderators’ discretion, meaning Roblox will not issue or reverse bans made by the admins and moderators.
  • Roblox will attempt to block detected alt accounts from joining when a member is banned from the community.

New Permissions for Creator Group Roles

This may be a bit confusing, but Groups are now the way to manage your collaborations across Creator Hub and Studio, whilst Communities are the way to engage and grow your community. Permissions and Roles are still linked between the two under the Community. Here are all of the new (and some existing) permissions you can give to Roles created via the Creator Hub:

For new features on Creator Hub, Roblox is starting to hit feature-parity in a number of places (ie roles, revenue management). As a result, you will start to see more banners informing you of the new features, as well as the beginning of some redirects from the old pages to the new ones. To access these permissions, head to the Creator Hub, select your Community, and navigate to the Collaboration tab.

Group Invite Notifications

Roblox also recently launched notifications for Group invitations! This means that when you use the new Group invite flow via the Creator Hub, the person you’re invited will receive not only as an email like before, but also as a notification in Creator Hub and Studio.

Share Audio and Video with Groups

Last year, Roblox launched an asset privacy and permission feature that enabled you to share your audio and video assets with your friends. Now, you can now share your private audio and video assets with Groups. Group members can use the assets you share in any of the Group’s experiences.

Coming Soon: Forums

Forums are currently available for select Communities in alpha testing today. Once fully launched, Forums will allow Communities to host organized conversations with other members. Forums are slated to released by 2025.

The “Community Feedback” Group is the first to have Forums enabled. You can visit the Forums page today, but can not post unless you are invited.

Roblox has even more plans to further evolve Communities into 2025, so stay tuned for more features and updates to come! 👀
