Ever since Roblox was founded in 2006, they have always been working on ways to create the “next generation avatar” to help users further express themselves on the platform. From the introduction of new body types, to the release of R15, and now realistic characters called Rthro, Roblox doesn’t seem to want to stop anytime soon. This week, a plethora of new features have been discovered that further showcase how Roblox wants to continue to innovate on the avatar side of things. Let’s discuss exactly what has been revealed…

New Default Avatars

This week, some users started to see a new default avatar appear when creating a new Roblox account. As you probably know, the “bacon hair” has been the default avatar for years, and people have become greatly attached to it. However, like all good things in life, it must eventually come to an end. These new default avatars are equipped with support for layered clothing and dynamic heads. Only a small number of new accounts are seeing these new avatars when being created.

Dynamic Heads and the Removal of Classic Faces

Starting this week, Roblox will be beginning the process of updating the most popular heads to support expressions from emotes and, soon, real-time facial animations. This update will go through to the end of the year with the intent that every head has the ability to animate. This process is automatic, and no further action is required. By the end of the month, heads will be updated for the majority of active users.

Once heads have finished being updated, you will receive a new upgraded head with animation for each classic face you own. In a follow up announcement, Roblox had this to say regarding taking classic heads and faces off sale:

“When we add an upgraded head that supports facial animation we will remove the equivalent classic face, so there is only one version of a face available for purchase. Taking a face off-sale does not affect faces that you already own.”

If you had a classic head equipped and you want to revert back to it, your original head is still in your inventory under Classic Head. In the future, Roblox will be providing a new way for all your animated heads to match the classic shapes.

New Head and Accessory Adjustment Options Coming to the Avatar Editor

Newly discovered video showcases new features coming soon to the Roblox Avatar Editor, including the ability to refine your head’s shape and style, and adjust the position (X, Y, Z), rotation, and size of accessories on your avatar’s body. These new tools will help easily switch between classic and dynamic heads, as well as position accessories correctly to fit on these new heads. More information should be revealed about this feature at a later date.
